The Said and The Unsaid

I thought the most interesting aspect of this weeks reading was Macherey’s idea that “in order for something to be said, other things must be left unsaid.” What this ad actually does say is blatant – anyone can be affected by aids no matter who you are. However, what is unsaid is more worthy of note. Just as John Storey used the example of the car in Cultural Theory and Popular Culture: An Introduction to signify that we know cars pollute, so putting it in nature makes us think the antithesis, we know that wonder woman is strong, powerful, and invincible. So, putting wonder woman ghostly pale and dead-looking on a hospital bed is showing us the antithesis to everything we believed true about her.

On a less technical note, this advertisement is so insanely stark in comparison to the average depiction of super heroes that I think it really accomplishes its goal of contrasting our notions of invincibility with the real world. The whole “it could never happen to me” notion that so many people associate with themselves is really being torn apart in this advertisement and I find that remarkably fascinating.
