Power of money

We live in a society where money is everything. Money brings people happiness, fame, and acceptance. In the past episode of Gossip Girl, there was a scene where Lilly (Serena's mom) gets mad at Rufus (Dan's dad) because Serena didn't end up going to Brown. She was furious and didn't want to have to do anything with Rufus. It was very interesting to see because usually our cultural norm tells us that the man in the family wears the pants, but in this family Lilly is. She mentioned how being a Bass makes her something more than just an ordinary rich woman who lives in the upper west side. Because Lilly is the one making all the money and bringing in the riches to the family, I felt like Rufus's character as very subordinate and helpless. So it's counter hegemonic. We always think that the woman needs to stay home and take care of the kids, but here Rufus was the one staying home with the kids while Lilly was gone. I feel like this situation will interest the women in our society, because in ways it gives them power and hope. They are able to experience life that they were never able to have. Also younger viewers will be able to see how life would be like if they were independent and wasn't just known as someone's mom but as an influential figure in society. I think it is very important to represent these counter hegemonic views to keep us in check. To see how our reality and society is shaping our values and goals.
