For everyday news I usually turn to the New York Times. Yes I know its a little more liberal than say the Wall Street Journal, and yes I know I'm probably getting one skewed view of contemporary events. Truth be told for this reason I really just keep the art and specialty sections and I generally just skim the headlines in the news section and the business section tossing them out afterwards. For my news, I like to go to this site I mentioned in class the other day called Link TV. Like PBS, Link TV is a not for profit, donation based media site that broadcasts news from all over the world. So not only do you get CNN, FOX news, the New York or LA times, and more from the United States, but you also get views from Russia, Iran and other countries all in the same news report. It is interesting to see how each perspective reports the story differently and it gives a unique perspective on the issue. Link TV generally does not impose their own views on the issue they just present a variety of perspectives and pose thought provoking questions that make the viewers question what they are watching.
What I find particularly interesting is their section called Mosaic. This section is a comprehensive overview of news coming from different countries in the Middle East. So, you can get Iran's perspective on how the world is responding to their nuclear program, or Pakistan's view on the Taliban, or the Iraqi peoples thoughts on the United States invasion. I think this is the most important part because a lot of times in the United States we forget the effects of our actions on other countries and that there are people being hurt. It brings their lives into ours and allows us to feel connected to the people in the Middle East. Furthermore, the United States also has allies in the Middle East, such as Israel and are more inclined to show our allies differently. It is interesting to see each countries view on certain issues about the countries around them.
If your looking for a new way to look at news and like to see multiple perspectives go to www.linktv.org and in their words "Build a Better Media!" Heres a video on what the world thought about Barack Obama's peace prize:
